I would've loved to see some more progression shots (1998-2011), especially in terms of level design. One thing I would've really loved to see more of, is the evolution of DNF's art. I kind of get the feeling that this has something to do with the game's horrendous development cycle, artists that came and went as well as a certain lack of focus and overall goal. However some of the stuff looks kind of bland and soulless. Some drawings are really, really good - very detailed and lovely laid out. The art across those 100 pages is kind of a mixed bag. You will get an insight on the development of the Duke himself, his arsenal, aliens, allies, environments and more. The Art from the Vaults section is divided into 6 chapters. Of course in this review I will only talk about the book`s art section. About 100 pages are dedicated to the games art. The guide has a hardcover binding which is not of the best quality and the pages are very thin. The book is an extensive, around 350 pages thick game guide. That said I ordered the Balls of Steel Limited Edition Guide to the game, featuring the History, Legacy & Legend - Duke Nukem Forever - Art from the Vaults section. As a hardcore Duke Nukem 3D fan I was really looking forward to any type of art book for this special game. However if you keep an open mind about Duke Nukem Forever, you will see that the game offers quite some joyful moments and that there's a lot of variety in terms of level design, especially considering it's DLC The Doctor Who Cloned Me. The game got abysmal reviews by critics and gamers alike. In mid 2011 Duke Nukem Forever actually hit the shelfs.

The supposedly vapourware title that would've never been released i fit wasn't for Gearbox Software and it`s charismatic CEO Randy Pitchford.

Just make sure to find a good price as full retail might be too high if your interested in just the art section only like I was.ĭuke Nukem Forever. If your interested in the art of Duke Nukem Forever or behind the scenes comments on the game, you might find this guide worthwhile as well. For the price I paid (which was very, very inexpensive) I do not regret my purchase. Like I said near the beginning of my review, my reason for picking up this guide was the 100 page art section. Again, the guide is not essential to beating Duke Nukem Forever, but it can be useful for certain things. The maps and tips it contains are not bad at all and even showed me a few hidden areas that I was not aware of despite having spend many hours with the game online. The multiplayer section of the book is actually quite useful. However, the guide can be useful for finding all the ego boosts, phone messages, and things like that. The game is pretty straightforward and most players would probably beat it without needing help. In all fairness, Duke Nukem Forever does not really need an extensive guide at all. Now as far as the guide is concerned, it is not bad. However the art section of this guide does a decent job at looking at some of the games art and giving us some comments from the people who worked on it. There is no doubt that with a game with such a long development history such as Dukem Nukem Forever, multiple books could be dedicated to its art and development and probably still not cover everything. You will still however find some content that ultimately did not make it into the game, and quite a few comments from the people who worked on Duke Nukem Forever over the many years that it was in production. The art itself is not bad, although it mostly covers different or early versions of the enemies, weapons, and environments that are in the game. I always like to see concept art for video games and since this book had a 100 pages of art and behind the scene comments, it caught my attention even though I had long finished the game already. Now I will admit when I purchased this guide I was more interested in the art section that is an extra of this Limited Edition than anything else. I will try and make this review as brief as I can since I am hoping my video gives you a decent idea of what the guide looks like.
